LOS ANGELES (AP) - The assault on the 3,800-acre fire in the San Gabriel Mountains could get a boost if rain showers develop from remnants of a tropical storm streaming over Southern California.
The chance of showers Wednesday and Thursday comes with the risk of dry lightning, however, and the National Weather Service says dry lightning has already set more than 50 fires in California this summer.
The fire started Sunday northeast of Los Angeles. Containment is put at 24 percent Wednesday, and officials expect it to be fully surrounded on Sept. 13.
Nearly 1,300 firefighters are working the blaze in treacherous terrain. At least five have sustained minor injuries.
