The Humboldt River is an inch below flood stage right now and rising. Sometime after midnight tonight, it will likely overflow its banks and put parts of the community of Battle Mountain underwater according to the National Weather Service.
As of 8:15 Tuesday morning the river was at 9.4 feet and flood stage is 9.5. It is expected to rise to two inches above flood stage, causing minor low-land flooding with rural roads succumbing to the deluge.
According to the Elko Daily Free Press, last night .87 inches of rain had fallen, breaking the record for the date on Monday. Since October 1, 2010 the Weather Service has recorded 10.6 inches of rain which is just a half inch above average.
The Free Press is reporting that the rain, combined with the run-off from melting snow is causing the streams and rivers to rise, leading to the hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service.
Another storm is expected tomorrow, bringing strong winds along with more rain.
