Barnes & Noble Hosts Book-tober Fair to Benefit Washoe CASA Foundation

Event Dates and Times

10/18/2017 - 11/1/2017
The Washoe CASA Foundation will hold its inaugural Book-tober Fair at Barnes & Noble in Reno, Nev. to raise funds benefiting foster care children in Washoe County.

From October 18-November 1, 2017, Barnes & Noble will contribute a percentage of sales to the Washoe CASA Foundation. Sales include books, merchandise, and Starbucks coffee, cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory and other food items from the Barnes & Noble Cafe. All shoppers need to do is mention CASA at checkout.

People can also support the Washoe CASA Foundation by shopping online at www.bn.com/bookfairs from October 18-November 6, 2017 and include the Book-tober Fair voucher ID #12200952 on the payment page during checkout.

The Barnes & Noble Book-tober Fair will help the Washoe CASA Foundation underwrite expenses for the benefit of foster care children in Washoe County. There are currently more than 900 children in foster care in Washoe County and approximately 100 CASA volunteers. CASAs are Court Appointed Special Advocates for the Second Judicial District Court’s CASA Program.

After training, CASA volunteers are empowered directly by the courts to offer judges critical information they need to ensure that a child’s rights and needs are being attended to while in foster care. CASA volunteers add great value to the team of professionals working on behalf of these children and are among the most informed people in our community about the needs of abused and neglected children. These children are better served by the juvenile court when CASA volunteers are available to speak on a child’s behalf.

The Book-tober Fair will showcase a series of family-friendly events including seven collectable buttons, storytime, a variety of arts & crafts and Halloween costume parades and contests. A full schedule is here:

The Real Inspector Hound

Event Dates and Times

10/6/2017 - 10/28/2017
Bruka Theatre 99 N. Virginia, Reno, NV 89501
Reno, NV. Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound opens the 25th anniversary season at Brüka Theatre on October 6, 2017. Feuding theatre critics Moon and Birdboot, the first a fusty philanderer and the second a pompous and vindictive second stringer, are swept into the whodunit they are viewing. In the hilarious spoof of Agatha Christie-like melodramas that follows, as mists rise about isolated Muldoon Manor, Moon and Birdboot become dangerously implicated in the lethal activities of an escaped madman.

The Real Inspector Hound is a madcap murder mystery farce directed by John Blomberg. Blomberg, who directed last year’s Happy Birthday Wanda June, has worked with many theatre companies in the region as an actor, director and theatre maker.

The Real Inspector Hound opens at Brüka with a post-show opening night champagne reception and appetizers from the Wild River Grille on October 6, 2017. The show runs weekly Thursday through Sunday through October 28, 2017. Evening shows begin at 8:00 pm (Artist night is Wednesday October 25, 2017 – all tickets on this night only are $10.) There is one Sunday matinee on October 15th at 2:00 PM followed by a talk back with the company and our audience. The doors open a half an hour before curtain time. The play is suggested for ages 8 and up.

Something Spooky in Truckee Trails & Vistas hosts annual Truckee’s Haunted Historic Tour

Event Dates and Times

10/19/2017 - 10/20/2017
Truckee, California
This October, Trails & Vistas presents an eerie experience exploring spooky ghostly tales in their Truckee’s Haunted Historic Tour. During the walkabout through the area’s sinister past of yesteryear, participants will be guided through the first home, first school, first church, the oldest building and the oldest retail store in Truckee … and, there just may be a haunted visit by one of the ghosts rumored to inhabit these haunts. While the twists and turns of the tour are kept secret, event goers can expect an adventure filled with fright. The writers, actors and producers have been working for months to come up with performances that are based on actual events that took place in Truckee — with a little bit of added flair for entertainment’s sake.

“We take full creative license to ensure our guests are thoroughly entertained, occasionally harassed and sometimes doted upon,” says tour producer Maria Jones.

Performances will take place at the host sponsor sites: Cabona’s, Community Arts Center, OLAB “Grey’s Cabin, Church of the Mountains, Sacred Salon, Ela Chapman Boutique and Art Truckee in the Capitol Building. Before and after the tour, participants are invited to sneak up to the bar at Moody’s, the sponsoring watering hole.
