Main anchor and assistant news director Brent Boynton came back to television news and back to KOLO-TV in 2007 after serving the people of Nevada as communications director for Governor Jim Gibbons. Before his brief foray into politics, Brent had served as Channel 8’s 11:00 anchor and reporter from 1997 to 2006. Brent grew up in the small town of Pampa, in the panhandle of Texas near Amarillo. He fell in love with broadcasting as a toddler and recorded his first “TV newscast” into a reel-to-reel tape recorder at age four. He began announcing for radio station KPDN at age 15. In 1978, before his graduation from Texas Tech, Brent got his first job in television, anchoring the weekend newscasts for KMCC-TV (now KAMC-TV) in Lubbock, Texas. He went on to work as anchor, producer and reporter at stations in Odessa and Amarillo, Texas. Brent came to Reno in 1993 to anchor news for KTVN, Channel 2, and he moved to KOLO in 1997. As a proud member of the “Team You Know and Trust,” Brent delivered 11:00 newscasts nightly and reported on a wide variety of news that affects northern Nevadans. He worked with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Nevada Fire Safe Council to help create the “Living With Fire” videos now available to help homeowners prepare for and survive wildfire. After the retirement of KOLO icon Tad Dunbar, Channel 8 approached Brent to anchor its early evening newscasts and to serve as assistant news director. He jumped at the chance to “come home.” You can see Brent on KOLO 8 News Now at 5:00 and 6:30 on weeknights. You can also see him around town, frequently as the emcee of a non-profit fundraising event.
Brent enjoys shooting sports, photography, hiking and camping. He lives in Reno with his wife, Patricia. A decade and a half ago, Brent joked that he was going to become a Nevada native as quickly as possible. He hasn’t quite achieved that status, but old-timers say he’s made progress. Brent’s pleased to be a part of the Reno community, proud to be back on the KOLO team, and honored to be someone you trust for news.
