Wyoming Hands Nevada Women Their First MW Loss

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell 72-64 to Wyoming in the team’s first Mountain West defeat Saturday afternoon at the Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.

With the loss, Nevada falls to 6-7, 1-1 MW on the season, while Wyoming improves to 10-2, 1-0 MW.

Wolf Pack junior forward Emily Burns had the hot hand for Nevada to start the game, scoring the team’s first nine points, as the score was 10-9 in favor of Wyoming. Marquelle Dent’s breakaway lay-up at the 13:51 mark put the Cowgirls ahead 18-11. A runner in the key by Amber Smith cut the Nevada deficit to 22-18 with 8:37 on the clock. Arielle Wideman’s three-pointer pulled the team within 28-25 of Wyoming with 3:59 left in the first period. The Cowgirls went into the break with a 37-29 lead.

Nevada broke out of the intermission on a 6-0 run to make the score 37-35. A three-pointer by Kayla Woodward ended a three minute Cowgirls scoring drought. Wideman went one-of-two from the free-throw line at the 12 minute mark to get Nevada within one point of Wyoming at 45-44. Terilyn Moe tied the game at 46-46 on an inbounds play lay-up with10:41 on the clock. Mimi Mungedi’s basket in the key with 6:42 to play gave the Wolf Pack its first lead of the game at 52-50. Wyoming responded with a 14-0 run to take a 64-50 lead. Mungedi scored down low to get the deficit back down to single-digits at 64-56 with under three minutes left in regulation. With 2:21 to play, Danika Sharp hit a three-pointer to bring the score to 65-61. That was the closest the Wolf Pack would get, as the Cowgirls went on to win the game 72-64.

Emily Bruns led Nevada with 16 points, matching her previous career-high. Terilyn Moe reached double-digits for the eighth straight time, scoring 14 points and adding seven rebounds. Mimi Mungedi had 11 points. Kayla Woodward led all scorers with 26 points.

Nevada returns home next week to face UNLV in a Governor’s Series, presented by NV Energy game Wednesday night. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center.
