MALIBU, Calif. – A balanced offensive attack, including 10 kills from junior Sam Willoughby and a career-high six kills from classmate Sommer King, propelled the Nevada Wolf Pack volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Oral Roberts in the Pack’s first match in the Pepperdine Asics Classic on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Lyndsey Anderson chipped in with 24 assists and junior Tessa Lea’ea posted an efficient .368 hitting percentage in the winning effort over the Golden Eagles, a 22-7 squad from last season that returned four starters.
In the first set, an early 6-1 run that included two kills from freshman Madison Foley gave Nevada a 9-3 lead. ORU forced a back-and-fourth battle the rest of the set but the Wolf Pack capitalized on nine Golden Eagle errors, giving the Pack a 25-21 win in the first.
Willoughby’s fourth service ace of the evening, a career high, gave Nevada a 22-15 lead in the second set before a kill from Lea’ea three points later sealed the Pack’s second set of the match to go up 2-0.
The third frame was a convincing effort on the part of head coach Ruth Lawanson’s club. The Pack led by as much as 14 en route to a 25-13 victory in the deciding set.
The Pack will play two matches tomorrow against host Pepperdine at 12 p.m. and South Alabama at 5 p.m. to wrap up the weekend. The match against the Waves will be broadcast on demand via Pepperdine WaveCasts.
