COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a stellar performance this past weekend where she helped lead the Nevada volleyball team to the Pepperdine Asics Classic title, junior middle blocker Sam Willoughby has been named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday morning.
The Jamul, Calif. native, who was also named to the All-Tournament team for her play in Malibu, totaled 40 kills on a .453 hitting percentage and 11 blocks over the course of the two-day tournament. She is the first Wolf Pack player since 2010 to be given a conference Player of the Week honor.
“Sam had a tremendous weekend and she deserves this honor,” said fourth-year head coach Ruth Lawanson. “She played very consistent over the three matches not only in the front row play but also in the backcourt with her serve.”
Willoughby currently sits among the top six in the conference in hitting percentage, kills and points (54.0, 4.50 per set). After setting a career high in service aces with four in the sweep of Oral Roberts on Aug. 29, Willoughby tallied four more the next day to give herself eight on the season and the Mountain West lead in that category.
With 396 kills in her career, Willoughby has the chance to eclipse 400 kills when the Pack returns home to the Virginia Street Gym for the home opener against Sacramento State on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
