LOGAN, Utah – Strong work in the circle was the theme of the weekend for the Nevada softball team and Sunday was no different as the Pack defeated Mountain West foe Utah State 3-0 to complete the weekend sweep.

As had been the case all weekend long, the Wolf Pack (25-24, 7-14 MW) struck first in the ballgame, scoring a run in the top of the first. Sophomore Megan Sweet skied an opposite field, solo home run to left to give the Pack an early 1-0 lead, her fifth long ball of the season.

The Aggies (18-32, 6-15 MW) threatened with offense of their own in the bottom of the first, placing two runners in scoring position with just one out. Back-to-back strikeouts issued by Nevada starter Karlyn Jones, however, halted the USU threat.

Aside from the first two Aggie base runners, Jones was cruising through the beginning of the game. The first seven outs recorded for Utah State were all strikeouts thrown by Jones.

Nevada added a few insurance runs in the top of the fifth thanks to another long ball hit by Sweet. Sara Parsons reached with one out on a sharp ground ball single through the left side. With Parsons on base, Sweet hit an identical home run to the one she hit in the first inning, putting the Pack ahead 3-0. It marked Sweet’s second career multi-home run game.

With a strikeout of the last Aggie batter of the game, Jones set a new career-high in strikeouts during her time at Nevada, fanning 11 hitters on the day. Jones’ career-best in K’s is 12 that she tossed during her freshman season at Pittsburgh. She improved to 8-9 on the year and gave up just four hits. For the weekend, Jones struck out 19 and did not issue a single walk.

The three-game sweep of the Aggies is the first sweep for the Wolf Pack since the New Mexico series in late March. Today’s game also marked the first shutout for Nevada since game two of the series with the Lobos.

Nevada hosts Fresno State next weekend for the final home stand of the season, beginning this Thursday, May 8 at 4 p.m. The team will honor the six Wolf Pack seniors prior to the final game of the season this Saturday.
