Trae Carter-Wells probably could have earned a scholarship at many schools, but the Reed wide receiver chose instead to stay in town and attend the University of Nevada as a preferred walk-on.

"I really wanted to stay home," Carter-Wells said. "I've loved UNR my whole life and I've always had a dream of playing at UNR. It's always been a dream of mine."

His high school coach Ernie Howren commented, "Why would you not want to play for your hometown university and go to Nevada? It's a great university, and they play great football up there. We're excited about the program, so I think it was an easy choice for him."

Carter-Wells was one of the most explosive high school players in all of Northern Nevada, but Howren says it's his football IQ that really separates him.

"It's easy to look at his athleticism and the things that he can do physically, but I think it's those other things that some other kids maybe don't have that Trae does possess. His understanding of defensive coverages, how to run routes, when to break routes off. He's a smart kid."

Carter-Wells added, "I think they liked how mentally advanced I was as a player, because I know a college level scheme thanks to Coach Howren."

Of course, as is the case with any walk-on, Trae hopes to eventually earn a scholarship.

"I really want to earn a scholarship so I can take some of the burden off my parents. I'm glad they can support me through this first semester, but I'd like to get a scholarship soon so I can get them a little bit of free time."

When asked if he thought Carter-Wells could contribute to the Wolf Pack, Howren responded, "There's no doubt in my mind. With his strength and his size and his speed, (Nevada Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning Matt Eck) gets him, and he's going to make him bigger, faster, and stronger. I think he's a kid that would be ready to play this upcoming season if they need him."
