Pack Women Fall at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell 67-59 to San Diego State Wednesday evening at Viejas Arena in San Diego, Calif.

With the loss, Nevada drops to (6-11, 1-3 MW) on the season while San Diego State improves to (13-5, 4-1 MW).

Nevada sophomore Emily Burns got the Wolf Pack out to a 10-6 lead over San Diego State with seven early points. Senior Chanelle Brennan was also sharp out of the gate, giving Nevada a 15 -11 lead with a made layup at the 12:30 mark. Burns and Brennan combined to score 17 of Nevada’s 19 points at the midway point of the first half.

San Diego State took its first lead of 23-22 with 5:45 on the clock. Wolf Pack junior Danika Sharp pulled the team within one point of SDSU at 27-26 with two shots from the free throw line. Nevada reclaimed the lead on its next possession on a made jump shot by Sharp. The Aztecs led 33-31 at halftime. Brennan led the Wolf Pack with 10 points in the opening half.

Sharp continued to have the hot hand out of the break as she knocked down a jumper to tie the game at 33-33. Four consecutive points by Nevada freshman Nyasha LeSure gave the Wolf Pack a 44-41 lead with 11:42 on the clock. San Diego State answered with a 14-2 run to take a 55-46 lead with nine minutes to go in the game. Junior Arielle Wideman stepped up for the team, closing the gap to 57-55 at the free throw line with 5:05 to play. The Aztecs closed out regulation on a 12-4 run to win the game 69-57.

Danika Sharp just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Emily Burns was close as well, finishing the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks. Chanelle Brennan added12 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. San Diego State’s Chelseas Hopkins led all scorers with 25 points.

The Wolf Pack shot 40 percent from the field to 34.7 percent to the Aztecs.

Nevada will remain on the road for a game against Boise State Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
