SAN DIEGO – The University of Nevada (6-7, 3-4 MW) baseball team won the first game of the three-game Mountain West series 4-3 over San Diego State at Tony Gywnn Stadium on Friday night. With the victory the Wolf Pack improved to 3-4 in MW play and 6-7 overall. The Aztecs dropped to 9-4 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.
Leading 2-1 after three innings Nevada got a two-run homer from junior designated hitter Bryce Greager in the top of the fourth inning and held on for the 4-3 victory. Greager’s first home run at Nevada scored third baseman Bryce Barger who reached on a walk.
The Pack scored in the top of the first when first baseman Austin Byler doubled and scored on catcher Jordan Devencenzi’s two-out RBI single. Byler tripled in second baseman Justin Bridgman in the third inning and it was 2-0.
SDSU scored its first run in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk. The Aztecs got within a run scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pack reliever Colby Blueberg replaced starter Michael Fain with two on and none out in the seventh and worked out of the jam to keep Nevada on top 4-3.
Blueberg worked into the ninth inning but after throwing three consecutive pitches out of the zone to leadoff hitter Greg Allen was replaced by Adam Whitt. Whitt retired Allen and the next two batters to earn the save.
Fain (2-1) won for the second time this season allowing just one run on four hits and struck out six in his six innings on the mound. Whitt (3) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his third save of the season.
Byler (2-for-4,R, RBI), Devencenzi (2-for-4,RBI) and Bridgman (2-for-3,R,) had two hits each for the Pack. Greager’s first home run at Nevada scored two while Byler had two extra base hits, a double and a triple.
SDSU’s Seby Zavala had three of the Aztecs seven hits in the game and Allen (2-for-5,R) collected two hits. Three different Aztec hitters had an RBI.
