NEW YORK - It was a whirlwind day for Lyle Overbay, who began the morning on one team, and ended up with their biggest rival.
The former Wolf Pack star was released by the Red Sox, and signed to a minor league deal by the Yankees. But he will get a chance to make New York's major league roster as a first baseman.
Overbay batted .220 with seven RBIs in 19 spring games this year. He has a .270 career batting average over 12 big league seasons.
Overbay played in 65 games last year split between the Diamonbacks and the Braves, batting .259 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 116 at-bats.
He was an All-American his final season at Nevada.
