San Diego, Calif. – In a battle for second place in the Mountain West standings, the University of Nevada baseball team lost a pitcher’s duel between Wolf Pack starter Braden Shipley and Aztecs right-hander Michael Cederoth 2-0 on Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The loss dropped the Pack to 17-12 on the season and 5-5 in MW play while SDSU improved to 15-15 and 6-4 in conference action.

The Aztecs scored a run without the benefit of hit in the first inning and Cederoth (2-4) had all the runs he would need. The big righty struck out a career-high 14 and did not allow a run on four hits in his eight innings on the mound. SDSU scored its second run in the third inning to make the final score 2-0.

SDSU brought in closer Bubba Derby (7) in the ninth inning but he struggled walking Austin Byler and hitting Brooks Klein. After a sacrifice bunt by Brett Jones, Derby struck out the next two Pack hitters to record his seventh save of the season.

Shipley (4-1) tossed his first complete game of the season but allowed the two runs on just three hits and struck out five in eight innings. The loss was his first of the season dropping him to 4-1 on the year.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The Pack sends sophomore Tyler Wells (4-1) to the mound while SDSU counters with junior Philip Walby (1-2).
