SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of Nevada (2-2) baseball team lost 4-3 in 10-innings to Santa Clara (1-3) at Schott Stadium today. The Wolf Pack went 2-2 the opening weekend of the season. The Pack begins Mountain West play at Fresno State (2-1) next weekend under the direction of first-year head coach Jay Johnson.
With the game tied at three the Broncos scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th when pinch hitter C.J. Jacobe singled home pinch runner Kert Woods. Woods was running for Max Kuhns after he started the inning being hit by pitch.
SCU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 advantage. Nevada tied the game at one after first baseman Austin Byler doubled home left fielder Kewby Meyer in the top of the sixth. The Broncos regained the lead 2-1 with another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Nevada took advantage of two SCU errors in the top of the seventh to move in front 3-2. Shortstop Kyle Hunt drove in one of the runs and the other run scored on a double play. The Broncos tied the game at three with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on to win in 10 innings 4-3.
Pack reliever Adam Whitt (0-1) suffered the loss allowing the one run on two hits in his 2.1 innings on the mound. Freshman Trenton Brooks earned his first collegiate start and allowed two unearned runs on four hits in five innings of action.
Nick Medeiros (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory.
Meyer (2-for-5,R) and third baseman Scott Kaplan (2-for-4,R) led the Pack with two hits apiece. Byler and Hunt each drove in a run.
Seven different players had hits for the Broncos and Jacobe had the only RBI of the game for SCU.
