FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Nevada (2-5, 0-3 MW) baseball team lost the final game of a three-game Mountain West series 11-9 to Fresno State (5-2, 3-0 MW) on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field. The Bulldogs won all three games of the first MW series of the season for both schools. After starting the season 2-0 the Wolf Pack has dropped its last five games.
The Pack led 5-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning but the Bulldogs scored seven runs on five hits and there were two errors to move in front 9-5. The Pack cut the deficit in half scoring twice in the top of the eighth but FS scored twice in the bottom of the inning to once again make it a four-run cushion 11-7.
Nevada scored two more times in the top of the ninth but it was not enough as FS held on for the 11-9 victory. The Pack’s nine runs and 12 hits are season highs.
Tyler Wells (0-2) the third of six Nevada pitchers was tagged with the loss allowing four runs on three hits and retired just one batter. Garrett Mundell (1-0) earned his first victory of the season as he retired just one hitter in the game. Dillon Houser (1) earned the save recording the final two outs of the game.
Shortstop Kyle Hunt (3-for-4,2R) led the team with three hits and scored two runs. Left fielder Kewby Meyer (2-for-3,2R,RBI) and catcher Jordan Devencenzi (2-for-5,RBI) had two hits apiece. Six different Nevada hitters had an RBI.
Third baseman Chris Mariscal (3-for-6,2R,RBI) and catcher Trent Woodward (3-for-5,R,2RBI) led FS with three hits each. Woodward and right fielder Jordan Luplow each drove in two runs.
Nevada returns to action on Tuesday at Sacramento State (4-4) with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The game will be played at Raley Field, the home of the Triple A Sacramento River Cats.
