Nevada Drops First Game of Doubleheader at San José State

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The University of Nevada (13-14, 6-7) dropped the first game of a Mountain West doubleheader 2-1 to San José State University (9-21, 5-8 MW) at Municipal Stadium Saturday afternoon. The second game is underway after rain washed away Friday’s regularly scheduled contest.

The Wolf Pack is now 13-14 overall and 6-7 in MW action while the Spartans improved to 9-21 and 5-8 in conference play.

Pack junior Jason Deitrich (0-1) tossed his first complete game but was tagged with the loss allowing two runs on 10 hits in eight innings. Jackson Berumen (2-0) earned the win pitching two innings of relief and surrendered one run on four hits. Kalei Contrades (2) moved to the mound and pitched two scoreless innings to earn his second save.

SJSU scored a run in the first on three hits with first baseman Matt Carroll’s single scoring the run. The Spartans got an RBI double from center fielder Kalei Contrades in the fifth to make it 2-0.

Nevada’s run scored on catcher Jordan Devencenzi’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning. Shortstop Kyle Hunt waked and moved to third base on left fielder Kewby Meyer’s double. Hunt then scored on the Devencenzi fly ball to center field.

Left fielder Brad Gerig (3-for-4) had a game-high three hits for the Pack and Meyer (2-for-4) added a pair of doubles.

Jacob Valdez (2-for-4), Sheldon Daquioag (2-for-4) and Mike Simonini (2-for-3,R) each had two hits for SJSU.
