The University of Nevada baseball team committed a season-high five errors and coupled that with several wasted opportunities on offense in a 5-1 loss to UNLV at Peccole Park on Saturday afternoon. The Wolf Pack stranded a season-high 15 runners.
The loss dropped the Pack to 24-26 on the season and 11-15 in Mountain West play while UNLV improved to 33-17 and 15-11 in conference action. The Rebels won Friday night 12-2.
It started in the first inning after Pack starter Tyler Wells struck out the first two batters of the game. The third Rebel batter Brandon Bayardi hit a chopper back to the mound and Wells picked up the ball and threw it over the head of first baseman Hugo Hernandez even though Bayardi did not run out the play as there was confusion on whether the ball was foul. Wells stuck out the next UNLV batter but he reached base on a wild pitch putting two runners on. A fly ball to left field was dropped by Kewby Meyer as both runners scored. Wells recorded his fourth strikeout to end the inning but UNLV led 2-0.
Two errors on Hernandez on the same play and a second error of the game on Wells in the fifth inning led to two of the Rebels three runs in the inning being unearned but it was 5-0 UNLV.
While the Pack defensive was struggling the offensive woes continued as Nevada left a season-high 15 runners on base. Nevada left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings and stranded two runners in three other innings.
Nevada’s lone run scored in the fifth when right fielder Brooks Klein’s infield single scored Jamison Rowe from third base.
Wells (4-4) was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on just three hits but just one run was earned in his seven innings on the mound. Wells tied his career-high with nine strikeouts. Buddy Borden (7-1) won his seventh of the season giving up just the one run on eight hits in seven innings.
Klein and Meyer had two hits each for the Pack. Klein drove in the Pack run in the bottom of the fifth. Three different Rebel batters had a hit in the game.
Game three of the series and the final home game of the season will be with the Rebels at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Peccole Park. Senior Tom Jameson (1-6) takes the mound for the Pack and sophomore John Richy (5-4) pitches for UNLV.
Eight Pack seniors will be honored prior to the start of Sunday’s game. They are outfielder Jamison Rowe (Richland, Wash.), outfielder Brooks Klein (Blue Diamond, Nev.), infielder Hugo Hernandez (Sylmar, Calif.), pitcher Daniel Levine (Henderson, Nev.), pitcher Kody Gorden (Las Vegas), infielder Brett Jones (Fresno, Calif.), pitcher Tom Jameson (Reno, Nev.) and infielder Ray McIntire (Winters, Calif.).
