Megan Dortch pitched the University of Nevada softball team past the Fresno State Bulldogs on Friday night, as Nevada won 1-0 on a shutout from the sophomore from Reno.
Dortch improved to 6-7 on the year, while Nevada improved to 21-14 (1-1 MWC). Lucky number 21 matches Nevada’s win total from a season ago with 18 games remaining. Fresno State fell to 20-15 (1-1 MWC).
The standout performance from Dortch was comprised of five strikeouts and only one walk, and lowered her ERA to 4.26. She pitched well with runners on base, stranding 10 Bulldogs in seven innings.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the seventh on an error from Fresno State shortstop Maria Sio. With runners on first and second and two outs, Lauren Lastrapes grounded a ball at Sio, who attempted to go the short way and retire Jasmine Jenkins at second. She threw the ball away, and alert base running from Sara Parsons allowed the junior to round third and score.
Dortch pitched around a lead-off hit in the seventh to secure the victory for the Pack and record her third shutout of 2013. Parsons was 1-for-3, while Jenkins and Lastrapes each added a hit. Erin Jones returned to the Pack lineup after one day off, going 0-for-2 in the No. 3 spot.
Nevada and Fresno State will conclude the first weekend of conference play with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond.
