Byler Drives in Five in Nevada Win

RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada (16-14) junior first baseman Austin Byler drove in five runs to lead the Wolf Pack to a 9-4 victory over Santa Clara (13-19) at Peccole Park on Tuesday night. The victory was the third in a row the Pack as they improved to 16-14 and the Broncos dropped to 13-19.

With the Pack trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning Byler singled home shortstop Kyle Hunt and left fielder Kewby Meyer to tie the score at two. Byler later scored on a double steal to put the Pack on top to stay 3-2.

Just one inning later his double scored Hunt and Meyer once again and it was 5-2 Wolf Pack. In his next at bat in the fourth inning he belted his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot to make the score 7-3. The Pack added another run in the fourth on an RBI double from center fielder Trenton Brooks. The final run scored in the sixth when pinch hitter Jordan Dunatov delivered a sacrifice fly to make the final scored 9-4.

While the Pack offense was scoring, four Pack pitchers combined to strikeout a team season-high 15 batters. Starter Tyler Wells recorded five strikeouts, Evan McMahan struck out four, Colby Blueberg four and Brooks had two after moving to the mound from the outfield. Byler struck out all four batters he faced. McMahan earned the win pitching three innings of relief and allowed just one run on four hits.

SCU starter Kevin George (1-2) suffered the loss allowing five runs on five hits in just two innings on the mound.

Byler (3-for-5,2R,5RB) had three hits and drove in five which is the high by a Pack player this season. Meyer (2-for-5,2R), Brad Gerig (2-for-3,2R) and Brooks (2-for-3,RBI) each had two hits as the team totaled nine.

SCU shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (3-for-4,R) led the Broncos with three hits. Four different players drove in a run for the Broncos.
