Amaya Pleads Not Guilty to Battery Charge

Former Wolf Pack football player Jonathon Amaya has pleaded not guilty to a battery charge for allegedly attacking a taxi driver.

Amaya was arrested back on November 26th; accused of trying to choke his driver, Jonathan Vunge.

Vunge told police Amaya was upset after being denied a ride that was deemed too far away from Miami Beach’s Club Bamboo. He claims that Amaya got agitated, began yelling and grabbed his neck from the back seat.

Amaya's attorney has denied the claims, and calls the case a complete fabrication.

“Jonathon Amaya never laid a hand on this man, never touched him, never threatened him,” criminal defense attorney Edward O’Donnell told the Miami Herald. “When a full investigation is made, we believe charges will be dropped.”

Amaya has requested a jury trial in the case. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is still investigating the allegations. They'll decide in the next few weeks if they want to pursue the case, or drop the charges.

He is in his third season in the NFL, and his second with the Miami Dolphins.
