RENO, Nev. — Sophomore Scott Smith has earned an individual bid to the 2009 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.

The University of San Francisco will play host to the regional May 14-16 at the par 72, 6,863-yard Lake Merced Golf Club. Live scoring for the NCAA Regionals will be available at www.golfstat.com.

This year marks the first NCAA Regional appearance for Smith who earned first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors this season. The Fallon, Nev., native is one of four golfers from the WAC to earn individual bids, while New Mexico State was the league’s automatic team qualifier.

“This is a big accomplishment for Scott, especially since he is only a sophomore. I know Scott would rather be going to the NCAA Regionals with his team, but I know he is going to represent the University of Nevada very well,” Nevada Director of Golf Adam Pohll said. “Because Scott plays well on tough golf courses like the Olympic Club, we think he has a really good chance of playing well. This is a tough golf course.”

Smith led the Wolf Pack with a 72.79 stroke average this season and turned in a team-best seven top 20 finishes this year. Smith turned in his best finish of the year with a tie for third place, just one stroke off the lead, at the San Francisco Intercollegiate in September. That tournament was played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, which is located just across Lake Merced from the site of the NCAA Regional.

Smith finished in the top 10 five times and was Nevada’s top finisher at five of 11 tournaments this season. He turned in a team-best 13 rounds at or under par, including four in the 60s with a career-low, seven-under 65 at the Wolf Pack Classic in October.

The NCAA Men’s Golf Committee changed its format this year from three regionals to six with 81 teams and 45 individuals qualifying for NCAA Regional play. The top five teams and one individual not on those teams at each regional site will earn an invitation to the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship May 26-30 in Toledo, Ohio. The University of Toledo will play host to the national tournament at the Inverness Club in Toledo.
