The University of Nevada (2-7) baseball team dropped its home opener at Peccole Park in Reno by a score of 11-2. The Huskies scored the final nine runs of the game after the Wolf Pack tied it up at 2-2 in the sixth inning. With the loss the Pack are now 2-7 on the season while UW evened their mark at 5-5.
Nevada scored a run in the bottom of the second inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Right fielder Brett Hart started the inning with a double and scored on third baseman Tyson Jaquez’ RBI single.
The Huskies took the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring twice on one hit. Pack starter Stephen Bautista hit two and walked one before giving way to reliever Tyler Graham. Shortstop Andy Bethel’s ground-out tied the game at 1-1 and with two down left fielder Jake Rifle’s single put UW on top 2-1.
Second baseman Matt Bowman’s fourth home run of the season leading off the bottom of the sixth inning tied the game at 2-2.
UW scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 6-2. Right fielder Kyle Conley started the inning with a solo home run to make the score 3-2. First baseman Troy Scott followed with a double and designated hitter Ty Rasmussen then singled home a run. Bethel delivered a two-RBI double in the inning to give the Huskies a four-run cushion. Catcher Pierce Rankin homered to start the ninth inning and second baseman Doug Cherry hit a grand slam to make the final score 11-2.
Reliever Tyler Graham (0-2) suffered the loss giving up three runs on six hits. UW starter Jorden Merry (1-0) earned the win giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings.
Jaquez (2-for-3) led the Pack with two hits and drove one run with other coming Bowman’s homer.
Conley (3-for-5,2R,RBI) and Scott (2-for-3,2R) had three and two hits respectively for the Huskies. Cherry drove in four and Bethel three in game.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park.
