Led by freshman Jamie Yam, the University of Nevada's women's golf team finished in seventh place at the 2009 Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic, held Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 23-24 at the par 72, 6,262-yard Copper River Country Club.
Nevada turned in a 23-over 311 in Tuesday’s final round and finished seventh at 56-over 920 (304-305-311). UC Irvine won the 13-team Fresno State Lexus Classic, finishing a three-round total of 27-over 891 (297-294-300). The Anteaters turned in a one-stroke victory over San Francisco (892), while Long Beach State (896), UC Davis (899) and San Diego State (902) rounded out the top five teams.
For the Wolf Pack, Yam finished 18th to lead the team and turn in her third top 20 effort of the season. She shot a six-over 78 on Tuesday and finished at 10-over 226 (75-73-78) for the tournament. Senior Melanie De Leon joined her in the top 20 with a tie for 20th at 12-over 228 (78-75-75). Junior Pamela Abreu turned in her best finish of the season with a tie for 29th at 16-over 232 (74-77-81), while sophomore Lauren Hernandez was two strokes behind and tied for 34th at 18-over 234 (77-80-77). Freshman Alex Borcherts rounded out the Wolf Pack sqaud witha tie for 62nd (85-83-81=249).
Santa Clara’s Miki Ueoka captured individual medalist honors at the tournament with a three-round total of seven-under 207 (68-69-72). She turned in a three-stroke victory over Long Beach State’s Kay Hoey (212).
The Wolf Pack will return to action March 16-18, traveling to the Donnis Thompson Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. The University of Hawai’i will play host to the event at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
