Nevada's women's Nordic team turned in three top 10 finishes Saturday to lead the Wolf Pack skiing squad to a third-place finish at the 2009 NCAA West Regional and Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships, held Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 19-21 at Mt. Rose and the Auburn Ski Club.
Nevada's women finished second in the team standings of the women's 10K freestyle race at the Auburn Ski Club in Truckee with 72 points, while Nevada finished third overall with 485 team points. New Mexico won the NCAA West Regional with 565 points and bested Colorado by 26 points (539). Nevada was third (485), followed by Denver (483), Alaska-Anchorage (447), Utah (444), Montana State (379) and Whitman College (210).
Freshman Åse Carlson led the Wolf Pack with a sixth-place finish in the women's 10K with a time of 26:56.9. Senior Chelsea Holmes finished seventh in 30:09.8, while junior Kristin Roennestrand was eighth, finishing the race in 30:13.7.
In the men's 15K freestyle, freshman Elias Bucher (37:39.1) and sophomore Jonathan Pluvinet (37:59.6) were Nevada's top finishers, taking 17th and 21st, respectively.
Nevada will return to action March 11-14 at the 2009 NCAA Skiing Championships. Bates College will play host to the national championships at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine (alpine) and Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine (Nordic).
