Reno, Nev. - Two members of the University of Nevada baseball team have been selected to the Rivals.com 2009 Preseason Western Athletic Conference baseball team in seniors Matt Bowman and Tyson Jaquez. As team the Wolf Pack were picked to finish fourth by the website behind Fresno State, San Jose State and Hawai`i. The Pack begin practice on Feb. 1 in preparation for the season opener Feb. 20 versus Gonzaga in the Phoenix Arizona Tournament.
Bowman, the Pack’s left fielder last season, was selected to the team as a second baseman where he will play his senior year. Last season he hit .355 with 55 runs scored, 20 doubles, four home runs and drove in 36 which helped him earn second-team All-WAC honors. The .355 average is tops among the returners for the Pack this season. He ranked in the to five in 12 offensive categories on the team as a junior in 2008. Selected in the 49th round of the 2008 MLB draft by the Oakland A’s he chose to return for his senior season in 2009.
Jaquez, caught a team-high 35 games for the Pack in 2008, his first year of playing the position. His versatility could allow him to move to third base this season, a spot he played his sophomore year with the Pack. A year ago he hit .292 with 28 runs scored, 26 RBI and a team-leading nine home runs. He was named to the All-WAC Tournament team after hitting .400 with three home runs and six RBI. All three of the home runs came in a first round victory over San Jose State, two in the same inning.
