Wimberly Named Wolf Pack MVP

RENO, Nev. – Senior wideout Brandon Wimberly was named Sunday as the Golden Helmet Award winner as the team’s most valuable player in 2013 at a team function on Sunday.

Wimberly capped his terrific Wolf Pack career on Saturday with 10 catches for 117 yards against BYU. He finished with 261 career receptions (third all-time at Nevada) for 3,049 yards (sixth) and at least one reception in all 52 games of his career, just two games shy of the NCAA record.

Junior quarterback Cody Fajardo was named as the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player after completing 67.9 percent of his passes for 2,668 yards, 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He was also second on the team in rushing yards (621) and touchdowns (eight).

Junior end Brock Hekking was named the team’s Outstanding Defensive Player. He led the team with 9.0 sacks for a loss of 68 yards and 14.5 tackles for loss for 80 yards. He also recorded an interception, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

Senior punter Chase Tenpenny and junior Gabe Lee were the Co-Outstanding Special Teams Players. Lee proved to be one of the top players on coverage teams and also played linebacker on defense. Tenpenny had one of the top seasons in school history and finished his career with a school-record average of 43.9 yards per punt.

True freshman kicker Brent Zuzo earned Outstanding Freshman honors after connecting on 14 of 17 field goals and 33 of 36 extra points. He made the first 11 field goal attempts of his career.

Senior tackle Joel Bitonio was named the Basalite Big Blocker of the Year as he capped his career with an outstanding season for the Union. Bitonio also earned a Striker Award.

True freshman quarterback Dante Mayes and true freshman defensive lineman Kevin Sundberg earned Scout Team Player of the Year honors.

Bitonio, Fajardo, Jordan Hanson and Jordan Dobrich received Captains’ Awards. Hekking and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jeremy Macauley earned Full Speed Effort Awards.
