ALTOPIANO DEL MONTASIO, Italy (AP) - Colombia's Rigoberto Uran won the first big mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday, while Italy's Vincenzo Nibali kept the overall lead after the 10th leg.
Pre-race favorite Bradley Wiggins of Britain finished 10th and dropped farther behind on the steep, uphill finish. Defending champion Ryder Hesjedal dropped out of contention on the first climb.
Uran rides for Wiggins' Sky team and won the best young rider's jersey during last year's race. He completed the 104-mile leg from Cordenons to Altopiano del Montasio in more than 4 ½ hours. The route featured two difficult climbs, including a long, grueling finish.
Another Colombian, Carlos Betancour, was the runner-up, 20 seconds behind. Italy's Nibali won a sprint for third, 31 seconds back.
