UNLV Edges Wolf Pack to Earn Weekend Sweep

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A comeback bid from the Nevada softball team was not enough to top rival UNLV Sunday afternoon as the Wolf Pack fell 3-2 at Eller Media Stadium, giving the Rebels the three-game sweep.

For the third time in the weekend series, the Rebels (13-18, 3-0 MW) scored in the first inning, getting just one run across in the bottom frame on a sacrifice fly to left. UNLV extended its lead to a 2-0 advantage in the second as Emily Haslinger doubled in the runner from third.

The Rebels slowly continued to add to their lead, bringing another run home in the bottom of the third. A triple, followed by a single to right field, increased the UNLV lead to a three-run deficit for the Wolf Pack (18-13, 0-3 MW). The opposition threatened for more in the inning, loading the bases with just one out. Freshman McKenna Isenberg entered the game in relief and worked out of the jam, getting two infield flies to end the threat.

Nevada found its way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, closing the gap with two runs. With freshman Nikki Orozco and senior Sara Parsons in scoring position, sophomore Megan Sweet singled home Orozco to give the Pack its first run of the afternoon. Sophomore Danielle Wiltz followed suit and drove in Parsons from third with a single of her own to center, cutting the deficit to a 3-2 UNLV lead.

In the sixth Nevada looked for a chance to tie the ballgame, placing two runners in scoring position. A pop out in the infield, however, ended the inning and all but secured the win for the Rebels as the Pack went down in order during the final inning.

Senior Ariel Craig (0-1) started the game for the Wolf Pack and threw 2.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on five hits. Isenberg tossed the remaining 3.2 innings and gave up just one hit, while striking out one batter.

Nevada returns to Hixson Park for a three-game, conference series with the Lobos of New Mexico this weekend (March 28-30). Friday’s opening contest begins at 4 p.m. All of the games will be broadcast at NevadaWolfPack.TV as part of the Mountain West Network. Gametracker will also be available for each game at NevadaWolfPack.com.
