UCLA Wins Opening Game at NCAA Regionals

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Adam Plutko pitched seven strong innings and Pat Gallagher had three hits to lift UCLA to a 5-3 victory over San Diego State in the teams' opening game of the Los Angeles regional Friday night.

Plutko (8-3) gave up two runs over seven innings. Zack Weiss pitched a scoreless eighth and David Berg gave up a run in the ninth, but struck out the side to close out the win. Berg earned his 19th save of the season to set a school single-season record.

Ryan Doran (8-4) gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings in the loss.

Gallagher doubled to lead off the third inning for the Bruins (40-17) and scored on Kevin Kramer's sacrifice fly to tie it at 1. Gallagher added a two-run single to highlight UCLA's three-run fourth inning.

Jake Romanski homered for Tony Gwynn's Aztecs (31-30).
