Reno, Nev. – Senior Samantha Diaz and junior Demerey Kirsch were named Division I All-Region Honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after standout performances at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship.

The distinction is awarded to individuals who finish within the top 25 at one of the nine regional championship competitions. Kirsch and Diaz earned the honor by finishing in 17th and 24th places respectively. In all, 450 student-athletes from across the country received the distinction, with nine student-athletes from schools in the Mountain West receiving the honor.

Kirsch and Diaz are the first student-athletes from the Nevada cross country team to finish in the Top-25 of a Regional Championship race since Abby McAllister turned in a time of 21:43 for a 14th place finish in the 2003 Mountain Regional, also held in Ogden, Utah.

The team’s end of the season performance capped off a strong season for the Wolf Pack. The 2013 season saw new school records in both 4,000 meter and 6,000 meter races as Samantha Diaz broke her own school record with a time of 14:27 in the 4k at the Nature’s Bakery Nevada Twilight Classic, and Demerey Kirsch set a school record in the 6k at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championship with a time of 21:04.

Nevada graduates two seniors from the record setting Mountain Regional team. The five student-athletes who will be returning all saw vast improvements in their racing over the last year, and all five set new personal records of more than 15 seconds in the final meet of the season.
