BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Stanford's Mark Marquess became the sixth baseball coach in NCAA history to reach 1,500 wins, earning the milestone Tuesday night with an 11-1 victory over California.

Marquess, in his 38th season coaching the Cardinal, joined Texas' Augie Garrido - the NCAA Division I career victories leader - and Florida State's Mike Martin as the only active coaches to achieve the mark. Gordie Gillespie, Gene Stephenson and Larry Hays are the only other coaches to win 1,500.

Marquess has a career record of 1,500-788-7 - all at Stanford. His first win came on Feb. 4, 1977, in a 6-1 victory over San Francisco, and several of his players have gone on to play in the majors, including Jeffrey Hammonds, Jack McDowell, Mike Mussina, Carlos Quentin and Ed Sprague.

"It has been great," Marquess said Tuesday night. "I've had a lot of great players go through the program."
