Spurned Seattle Buyer Behind Anti-Arena Group in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California's campaign watchdog agency says Seattle billionaire Chris Hansen is behind a secretive effort to block Sacramento's attempt to build a new downtown arena for the city's professional basketball team.

Friday's revelation is an embarrassment for Hansen, who tried to buy the Sacramento Kings and move them to Seattle until his bid was denied by NBA owners earlier this year.

The Kings' new owners are working with city officials to build the team a downtown arena.

But a Los Angeles law firm secretly donated $80,000 to a group gathering signatures to force a vote on the arena, prompting a lawsuit by the California Fair Political Practices Commission to learn the donor's identity. The commission revealed during a news conference Friday that it was Hansen.

The commission says Hansen gave $100,000 just a month after the NBA denied his attempt to move the team.
