RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada (11-11, 5-6 MW) baseball team got solid relief pitching to defeat Air Force (4-17, 1-7 MW) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Wolf Pack won Friday 5-1 and will look for the three-game Mountain West series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pack improved to 11-11 and 5-6 in MW play and the Falcons dropped to 4-17 and 1-7 in conference action.
Nevada got back-to-back doubles from first baseman Austin Byler and left fielder Kewby Meyer in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. With two down center fielder Trenton Brooks doubled in Meyer and it was 2-0 after an inning.
Air Force got a triple from shortstop Russell Williams and a sacrifice bunt from catcher Brian Sicher in the top of the second to close with a run at 2-1. An unearned run in the bottom of the third once again made it a two-run cushion for the Pack.
The Pack scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final scored 5-2. Third baseman Scott Kaplan singled to start the inning and eventually scored on Byler’s fielder’s choice. Meyer’s groundout scored Hunt with the second run of the inning.
Pack starter Barry Timko received a no decision allowing two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings on the mound. In the final 4.1 innings three Pack relievers combined to allow just two hits and no runs. Freshman Evan McMahan (2-0) won for the second time recording the final out of the fifth inning. Junior Colby Blueberg tossed three perfect innings retiring all nine hitters he faced and threw just 11 pitches. Adam Whitt (5) earned the save tossing one shutout inning.
Falcon starter Griffen Jax (1-5) suffered the loss allowing three runs, two earned in four innings.
Meyer (2-for-4,R,2RBI) and Brooks (2-for-4,RBI) led the Pack with two hits each. Meyer had a game-high two RBI.
Air Force third baseman Noah Pierce (2-for-4) had two of the Falcons eight hits.
