LONDON (AP) - Serena Williams says she is "heartbroken" to not be able to continue playing at Wimbledon.
Williams pulled out of a second-round doubles match with her sister Venus on Tuesday with what the tournament referee's office and WTA said was a viral illness.
In a statement emailed to The Associated Press through her agent, Williams says: "I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me."
Williams adds that she looks forward "to returning to Wimbledon next year."
Williams has won five singles and five doubles titles at Wimbledon. She lost in the third round of singles Saturday.
