San Diego State Defeats Nevada

The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell 58-45 to San Diego State Saturday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center.

With the loss, Nevada drops to (7-18, 2-10 MW) on the season while San Diego State improves to (21-5, 12-1 MW).

Nevada and San Diego State played even out of the gate, as the score was tied 7-7 at the 12:30 mark. A basket by Courtney Clements gave the Aztecs a 16-9 lead around the midway point. Julia Shelbourn’s layup with three minutes left in the half ended a five minute Nevada scoring drought to make the score 28-13. San Diego State led Nevada at the half 30-17.

Danika Sharp was aggressive out of the break, knocking down a three-pointer on Nevada’s first possession. Shelbourn’s fast break layup cut the deficit down to 36-30 with 14:45 to play. A steal and a layup by Chelsea Hopkins pushed the San Diego State lead to 42-32 at the 13:14 mark. The Aztecs built a 17 point lead with seven minutes to go and never looked back, winning the game 58-45.

Senior Chanelle Brennan led Nevada with 17 points. Junior Danika Sharp finished the game with 10 points. Freshman Julia Shelbourn had a career high eight points off of the bench. Junior Arielle Wideman had six assists.

Nevada will remain home to face Boise State Wednesday evening at Lawlor Events Center. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m.
