A seven-run fifth inning and a strong relief appearance from Ariel Craig pushed the University of Nevada softball team past New Mexico on Friday night by a final score of 9-6.

With the win, the Wolf Pack improved to 26-19 (5-5 MW), while New Mexico fell to 19-27 (3-7 MW).

The seven-run outburst came on six hits, including a three-run home run from Erin Jones, her third of the 2013 season.

Craig pitched four and a third to win for the second time this season, striking out six lobo hitters in relief of Megan Dortch. Karlyn Jones slammed the door in the ninth, striking out the side to save a game for the second time in 2013. Of the 11 pitches thrown by Jones in the seventh, nine were strikes.

Karley Hopkins and Lauren Lastrapes each drove in two runs, as Hopkins doubled for the 14th time this year in the big fifth inning. Lastrapes had three hits, including a double, and scored a run.

New Mexico was ahead 5-1 after scoring four unearned runs in the second, forcing the Pack to come from behind to level its Mountain West record at 5-5.

The two teams will play the middle game of their three-game series at 5 p.m. on Saturday, closing it out with an afternoon tilt on Sunday at noon.

Game Note: Freshman Danielle Wiltz saw her first two at bats of her career, coming into the game to pinch hit for Erin Jones after the Pack had taken an 8-5 lead.
