LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Nevada softball team suffered a 13-1 Mountain West opening loss against rival UNLV Friday night at Eller Media Stadium.

The Wolf Pack (18-11, 0-1 MW) opened the game with a one-run lead after the top of the first. Sophomore Amanda Weis collected her team-leading 26th RBI of the season after she roped a single to center field to score senior Erin Jones from second. Weis finished the game with two of the Wolf Pack’s five hits.

UNLV (11-18, 1-0 MW) scored at least one run during each of its four innings at the plate, including a seven-run bottom of the first. After the Pack got two outs in the frame, the Rebels loaded the bases and plated their first run of the game when Francesca Foti was hit by a pitch.

With the bases still loaded in the inning, the next UNLV batter, Emily Haslinger, singled up the middle, allowing two more Rebel base runners to cross home plate. A two-RBI triple by Garie Blando capped off the seven-run first inning, giving UNLV a 7-1 lead after one full inning of play.

The Rebels recorded two additional runs in their half of the second and continued to add to their lead as the game progressed. Pauline Monreal connected on a three-run shot to left in the bottom of the third that put UNLV ahead 12-1. Nevada placed runners at the corners with one out in the top of the fifth, but an infield fly out and strike out secured the 13-1 run-rule win for UNLV.

Junior Megan Dortch started the game in the circle and took the loss, dropping her pitching record to 7-5. Dortch tossed 1.1 innings and surrendered seven earned runs on five hits and two walks. Freshman McKenna Isenberg relieved Dortch in the second and threw 1.2 innings of work, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, while also issuing two strikeouts. Senior Ariel Craig finished up the pitching duties for the Wolf Pack and tossed one inning of work.

Nevada plays game two of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
