Pack Baseball Wins on Walk-Off Single

RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada (13-13) junior shortstop Kyle Hunt delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Wolf Pack at 3-2 victory over Grand Canyon (15-12) on Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Pack improved to 13-13 while the Antelopes dropped to 15-12.

The Pack plays its annual exhibition with the Reno Aces tonight at Aces Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

With the game tied a two going to the bottom of the ninth inning pincher hitter Trenton Brooks walked but two failed bunt attempts left him standing at first base with two down. Third baseman Scott Kaplan’s single moved Brooks into scoring position for Hunt. With the count full Hunt hit the ball over the center fielders head and Brooks scored the winning run.

GCU scored single runs in the first and second innings off Pack starter Tyler Wells. Nevada answered with two in the bottom of the third to tie the score at two. Catcher Jordan Devencenzi and first baseman Austin Byler each drove in a run in the inning. The game remained tied until Hunt’s game winning walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

Adam Whitt (3-3) the fifth Nevada pitcher of the day earned his third win of the season tossing two scoreless innings and struck out four. Trent Wilson (0-1) suffered the loss allowing the run in the ninth inning.

Hunt (2-for-2,R,RBI) and second baseman Justin Bridgman (2-for-4) led the Pack with two hits each. GCU’s David Walker (3-for-4,R) topped the Antelopes with three hits. Shortstop Paul Panaccione (1-for-4,2RBI) drove in both runs for the Lopes.

Nevada plays a three-game Mountain West series at San Jose State this weekend. Friday’s game is at 6 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday’s games starting at 1 p.m. The Pack won two of the three games played in Reno earlier this season.
