RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada (10-11, 4-5 MW) baseball team scored five unanswered runs to defeat Air Force (4-16, 1-6 MW) 5-1 in the first game of the three-game Mountain West series at Peccole Park on Friday. The Wolf Pack improved to 10-11 on the season and 4-5 in MW play while the Falcons dropped to 4-16 and 1-6 in conference action.
After four scoreless innings the Falcons scored a run in the top of the fifth inning when Spencer Draws singled home Russell Williams to make it 1-0. The Pack started its five run rally when first baseman Austin Byler’s third home run of the season scored third baseman Scott Kaplan and it was 2-1 Nevada after five innings.
Designated hitter Jeff Nellis doubled home center fielder Trenton Brooks in the sixth to increase the advantage to 3-1. In the seventh inning left fielder Kewby Meyer singled home Byler who tripled. Pack catcher Jordan Devencenzi followed with a double to score Meyer and Nevada led by the final score of 5-1.
Pack starter Michael Fain (3-1) pitched the first complete game of his career allowing the one run on four hits and struck out four. Cameron White (1-4) was tagged with the loss giving up five runs on 10 hits and struck out six.
Byler (2-for-4,2R,2RBI), Devencenzi (2-for-4,RBI) and Brooks (2-for-4,R) each had two hits for the Pack. Byler drove in a game-high two with his two-run homer in the fifth.
Four different AF batters had a hit and Draws drove in the only run.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
