RENO, Nev. – The University of San Francisco (19-20) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to defeat the University of Nevada (21-17) baseball team 4-1 in a nonconference matchup at Peccole Park on Tuesday night. The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 21-17 while the Dons improved to 19-20.
USF took advantage of four walks in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Bradley Zimmer walked to start the game and eventually scored the run on a double steal.
Nevada was held without a hit and had just two batters reach base on walks until the bottom of the seventh. With one down center fielder Brad Gerig’s fourth home run of the game was the first Pack hit of the game and tied the score at one.
In the top of the ninth two hit batters and an intentional walk loaded the bases for right fielder Derek Atkinson. Atkinson’s two-out double to left field scored all three Dons runners and USF went on to win 4-1.
Colby Blueberg (3-2) the sixth Pack pitcher of the game suffered the loss allowing one run in 1.1 innings on the mound. Ben Graff (2-0) earned the victory pitching 1.1 shutout innings. Houston Hibberd (7) earned his seventh save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Gerig (2-for-3,R,RBI) had two of the Pack’s three hits in the game and drove in the only run with his homer.
Atkinson (2-for-4,3RBI) had two of USF’s four hits and three RBI.
Nevada steps out of Mountain West play this weekend with a four-game series at Utah (12-24). Game one is set for 5 p.m. PT on Friday night. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. The final game is at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
