SAN ANTONIO - The University of Nevada swimming & diving team is in first place with 107 points after day one of the 2014 Mountain West Championship being held at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center. Boise State is third with 88 points followed by San Diego State with 80.
Wyoming and New Mexico are tied for fourth with 65 points. Colorado State (64), UNLV (60), Air Force (58), San Jose State (54) and Fresno State (50) round out the field.
Senior Grace Huang won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 309.99 as Nevada put three divers in the top six. Sophomore Krysta Palmer's score of 291.42 earned her third and senior Stephanie Hansen was sixth with a score of 276.30. Hansen won the event last season. The three divers earned a combined 49 points for team. Huang will seek to defend her title in the 3-meter on Thursday.
The 800-yard freestyle relay comprised of Sita Kusserow, Yawen Li, Michelle Forman and Teresa Baerens scored 34 points to place second with a time of 7:11.87. SDSU swam 7:06.64 to win the event.
In the first event of the evening Nevada's 200-yard medley relay squad of Luiza Vieira, Arantxa Medina-Alegria, Kusserow and Baerens swam 1:40.63 to finish seventh. The relay earned 24 team points.
Day two gets under tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. PT with the 500-yard freestyle prelims. The 3-meter diving, 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle will also be contested on Thursday.
