RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell 86-72 to UC Irvine Sunday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center.
With the loss, Nevada drops to 2-1, while UC Irvine improves to 2-1.
Wolf Pack senior guard Danika Sharp’s third made three-pointer of the half gave Nevada a 20-13 lead at the 11:35 mark. Anteaters guard Vanessa Aguilar knocked down a three to even the score at 34-34 with four minutes to go in the half. UC Irvine led Nevada 45-39 at halftime.
The Anteaters extended its lead to 11 with a jump shot by Aguilar at the 14:52 mark. A three-point basket by Amber Smith and a lay-up Arielle Wideman got the Pack within four of the Anteaters at 62-58 halfway through the second period. Two UC Irvine free throws stretched the lead to 75-65 with 6:30 to play. The Anteaters closed out the game to win it 86-72.
Sharp led all scorers with 20 points and tied her career high with six made three-pointers. Mimi Mungedi added 17 points. Wolf Pack senior Arielle Wideman just missed a triple-double, finishing the game with nine points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. UC Irvine had four double-digit scorers, led by 19 points each from Jennifer Tsurumoto and Mokun Fajemisin. The Anteaters finished the game with 27 second chance points to eight for Nevada.
The Wolf Pack will travel next week to Cal Poly Thursday for a game at 7 p.m.
