RENO - Bishop Manogue senior Jens Verhey signed a letter of intent to play college golf at Notre Dame on Tuesday.
"They have an indoor facility for when it gets cold in the winter and they also have a beautiful course on campus," said Verhey. "It's going to be incredible."
Verhey led the Miners to the State Championship last year, being named to the All-North first team. He believes his golf game can grow out in South Bend.
"The coaches are great; the head coach has been so supportive of me. The teammates were also great," said Verhey. "They took me in as their own and I can't wait to spend the next four years with them."
Verhey has excelled off the course as well. He was one of just 20 golfers in the country named a finalist for the President's Leadership Award this summer. He was also named a junior scholastic All-American last month.
"Notre Dame is the perfect balance between an excellent academic reputation and a great golf team," added Verhey. "But more than that, it's a community where I can practice my faith around a bunch of kids who are doing the same thing. And that's a rarity nowadays on college campuses."
Verhey scored a 2140 on his SAT's and carries a 4.18 GPA in the classroom.
