VAL D'ISERE, France (AP) - Lara Gut of Switzerland made the most of good conditions to win a World Cup downhill on Friday, while Lindsey Vonn's bid for a fifth straight win in speed events this season ended in a crash.

Vonn lost her balance and veered to the left, landing heavily into the netting. After a few moments, the American got back up and managed to ski to the bottom unassisted, suggesting she has no serious injury.

Vonn has won two downhills and two super-Gs this season.

But there was better news for the U.S. ski team as Leanne Smith finished in second place, with Switzerland's Nadja Kamer in third.

Overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia was 11th.
