MEMPHIS, Tenn.— Roger Kieschnick delivered the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Reno Aces a 4-3 road win in the series opener against Memphis.
The win snapped Reno’s season-high five-game losing streak.
The Aces got on the board with three runs in the top of the third. Nick Ahmed, Roger Kieschnick, and Alfredo Marte all singled, and after Mike Jacobs flew out to center, Andy Marte drove a two-out double to center field that scored Kieschnick and Alfredo Marte.
Each team cruised from there until the sixth inning when Memphis evened the score.
Ed Easley and Scott Moore each singled, and Xavier Scruggs followed with an opposite-field home run over the right field wall to tie the game at three.
In the top of the ninth inning, Ahmed reached on a two-out, infield single, and then moved to third on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Kieschnick then drove him in on a line drive single to right field to give the Aces the win.
Ahmed finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Andy Marte went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Both players recorded their 20th multi-hit games of the season, which moves them into a tie for third on the team.
Aces starter Andrew Chafin registered a quality start in the no-decision after he went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Kevin Munson went two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and got the win for Reno. Matt Stites pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 10th save of the season in as many attempts.
The clubs will meet again tomorrow night in game two of the series in Memphis. Right-hander Bo Schultz (4-4, 5.35) will get the start for the Aces, and Memphis will turn to left-hander Tim Cooney (6-4, 3.32). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
