LAS VEGAS – The University of Nevada (31-27) baseball team placed two on the Mountain West Championship all-tournament team in senior Scott Kaplan and freshman Trenton Brooks. The Wolf Pack went 3-2 at the championship held at UNLV’s Earl E. Wilson Stadium to finish third after placing fourth in the regular season.
The Pack ended the year 31-27 and went 15-15 in MW play under the direction of first-year head coach Jay Johnson. The 2015 MW Championship will be played at Nevada’s Peccole Park.
Kaplan started all five games at second base but also saw time at third base for the Pack. In the five games the Dana Point, Calif. native batted .412, scored three runs, had a double and drove in three.
Brooks from Alpine, Calif. started all five games in center field but also earned the win in relief versus New Mexico. On the mound versus UNM he allowed one run and struck out three in 2.1 innings to eliminate the co-regular season champion Lobos from the tournament. In Friday’s two elimination game wins he batted .600 with two runs scored, a home run and eight RBI. In the 10-2 win over Fresno State he was perfect at the plate with four hits, two runs scored, hit a two-run homer and drove in four. Against UNM he went 2-for-6 and again drove in four. His .435 batting average, 10 hits, 13 total bases and eight RBI in the championship led the Pack.
