Jones and Jones Lead Pack to Split at Nutter Classic

Nevada got another strong performance from Karlyn Jones and rode a six-run fifth inning en route to a 7-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday to wrap up play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

The win gave the Wolf Pack a split on the day as Nevada fell to No. 13 UCLA 13-4 in the first game. Nevada moved to 7-8 on the year with the split and the Wolf Pack will return to action next week at the Libby Matson Invitational hosted by Pacific in Stockton, Calif.

Jones was brilliant against the Gauchos as she gave up one run on four hits while walking one and striking out six. She improved to 4-3 on the year with the victory.

“I really thought we pitched well this weekend overall and that was a good sign to see from our club as we continue to ramp up towards Mountain West play,” said Nevada coach Matt Meuchel.

The game was a scoreless tie until the fifth when Nevada, the visiting team in the game, broke things open.

Megan Fincher drew a walk to start it and freshman Hannah Harger singled through the left side to put two on with nobody out. Karley Hopkins then laid down a bunt single to load the bases for Megan Sweet, who singled through the right side to plate Fincher and give Nevada a 1-0 lead.

Erin Jones then singled to make it 2-0 and keep the bases loaded. Sara Parsons ripped a two-run double to right-center to make it 4-0. Ashley Butera singled and Lauren Lastrapes scored Parsons with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0 and that’s all Jones needed.

Erin Jones went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Pack while Hopkins added two hits with a run.

In the first game against UCLA, Nevada could not dig its way out of an early 5-0 hole as UCLA scored five in the first off of four walks and just two hits. Megan Dortch took the loss for the Pack.

Erin Jones had a three-run double and Butera singled in a run to provide the Pack’s offense against the Bruins.
