Former Aces Player Leads Isotopes Past Reno

ALBUQUERQUE, NM— Former Aces outfielder Trent Oeltjen slapped a two-out, two-strike single to left to drive home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, pushing the Albuquerque Isotopes to their second-straight walk-off win over the Reno Aces, 7-6, at Isotopes Park.

One night after Jamie Hoffmann beat the Aces with a walk-off homer in the ninth, the Isotopes were down to the their final strike on Friday when Oeltjen rapped a run-scoring single through the left side that gave Albuquerque a 7-6 win and a 2-0 lead in the series.

Reno led 5-3 through six innings, but Albuquerque chipped away at the deficit with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead. The Aces tied the game in the ninth on a perfectly-executed safety squeeze by Mark Hallberg, but the Isotopes would answer with the game-winner in the ninth.

Kyler Newby (2-2) took the loss after surrendering the walk-off run on three hits in the ninth. Aces starter Matt Torra worked six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

The win went to Albuquerque reliever Merkin Valdez (2-0), who held Reno to a run on two hits over two innings of work. Isotopes starter Tim Redding surrendered five runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings.

At the plate for Reno, Cole Gillespie hit a three-run homer, and Collin Cowgill added a solo shot. Wily Mo Peña finished 3-for-4, falling just a home run shy of the cycle.

The series continues Saturday night at Isotopes Park. RHP Kevin Mulvey (2-3, 8.65 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the ‘Topes counter with RHP Mario Alvarez (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. PT.
