EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Leaders of a West Texas city have approved building a $50 million ballpark to host the Triple-A Tucson Padres.
The El Paso City Council on Tuesday night approved a contract with MountainStar Sports Group, which seeks to buy the Tucson team. The downtown ballpark would be built on the current El Paso City Hall site and leased to MountainStar.
MountainStar official Paul Foster said Tuesday the Pacific Coast League had approved moving the Tucson Padres. The team is affiliated with the San Diego Padres.
Foster says Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball could approve the sale within days. Play could begin in El Paso by 2014.
The overall $81 million city hall relocation and ballpark package includes ballpark construction, buying buildings for city offices and helping to identify funding.
