MATERA, Italy (AP) - John Degenkolb sprinted to victory on the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday, following a crash near the finish, and Luca Paolini retained the overall leader's pink jersey.
Degenkolb, who rides for Argos-Shimano, won in 4 hours, 37 minutes, 48 seconds along the mainly flat 123.6-mile leg from Cosenza to Matera.
Angel Vicioso was second, with Paul Maertens in third.
The finish was marked by a crash in the lead group just under a mile from the finish line. One of Degenkolb's teammates crashed on the final turn, bringing several other riders down with him.
Marco Canola raced clear but the Italian was unable to hold off his pursuers.
Favorite Bradley Wiggins remained sixth in the overall standings.
